All That You Need To Know About Premature Ovarian Failure In Women

Women usually suffer from premature ovarian failure, whereby they miss their regular periods. No, it is not at all related to pregnancy. It mainly happens, before they attend the age of 40 years. It is also termed as premature menopause, which means that her menopause might stop. It is necessary that you consult a doctor, just in case you start missing them for more than 3 months, continuously. A normal one usually occurs in women who are more than 45 years of age.

However, in some cases it might occur early as well. This happens when her ovaries stop producing eggs, which is required for reproduction. Remember, such a thing is quite different than the normal one, as women suffer from ovaries dysfunction, sometimes due to removal of ovaries at an early age or loss of eggs. They no longer can conceive naturally, as their hormone does not respond any longer.

Such an occurrence at an early age is not a good sign at all. It causes several medical disorders like heart problems, reduces their bone density, and many others. POF is also caused due to insufficient production of estrogen, which normally happens due to early stopping of menopause.

Low levels of estrogen and high level of FSH are the two main types of POF. In both the cases, the ovaries then do not produce eggs, which mean they are not fertile. Nowadays, teens also suffer from such disorder, shockingly at an early age. The reasons are numerous, though it can be cured with proper medical assistance. Almost 1 percent of women suffer from premature ovaries dysfunction, much before attending the age of 40 years.

There are certain withdrawal symptoms, which indicate that you are suffering from POF. The point here is that early withdrawal symptoms are quite serious, when compared to the normal ones, especially if it is happening at a quite early age. It is related to genetic disorder and sometimes some radiotherapy treatment triggers such an issue. Few endocrine issues like hypothyroidism cause such an issue.

Some of the other reasons that causes this issue are as follows –

  • Due to autoimmune diseases
  • Genital tract, due to TB
  • Smoking
  • Radiation treatments
  • Enzyme defects
  • Due to multiple ovulation infertility

Fertility Rate:

Premature menopause no doubt is a matter of concern for women who still want to enjoy the bliss of motherhood. It has been noted that almost 5- 10 percent of women, still can conceive naturally, even after suffering from POF. Of course you need to consult an expert doctor and get the best treatment to cure this disorder. Sometimes doctors recommend them IVF, as one of the means of becoming parents.

Infection Transmitted from Mother to Fetus:

In some rare cases, pregnant women who have been contacted with viral infection transmit it to the fetus in her womb. In such cases, the baby girl is born with low percent of eggs, which otherwise is commonly found in women. If you experience irregular periods, night sweats, hot flashes, disrupted sleep, vaginal dryness, sudden weight gain, and others then it is an indication that you are suffering from POF.
